Project Theme: Small Business for Peace
Duration: 2 years
Location: Lagos and Imo State
Background:
Overcoming the insufficient skills in information, management and marketing, as a way of achieving economic independence and security, as the option for survival and achieving a relatively peaceful, conflict free and sustainable developed society, is the aim of this initiative.
The average Nigeria is confronted with an endless list of challenges: the fact is that social and economic injustice is not an accident. This springs from the very nature of capitalism, now in it's phase of globalization. The problem is that the institutions that crate wealth are not neutral as to distribution, therefore a system that somehow sets consumption and production targets based on minimum human needs should be instituted and development redefined as a secretive attack on the worse forms of poverty.
Targets:
Women community based organization, youths within the ages of 13- 18 and young adults from organizations (e.g. Religious, Youth based organization, age grades)
Objectives:
· To empower the target audience to be more self- sufficient, to acquire greater economic and political voice for a more inclusive social institution, investment and less conflict.
· To provide training, consultation and guidance in the critical first step of starting and running a small business.
· To create future employers of labour and reduce poverty
· To create or educate cooperatives that seek to reduce post harvest loss of food
· Overall to encourage women to overcome culturally- rooted constrains and create links to information, credit, marketing, networks and technology.
Justification:
Promoting small business will reduce the problems of unemployment, poverty and promote peaceful society. Small business is the solution for women and youths whose access to the job market has been denied by social or economic inequality. Women affect whole families therefore a whole generation; they are a factor of stability, reconciliation and role models for youths.
This will create economically empowered, a more peaceful, stable and sustainable developed larger society. This will facilitate the actualization of the government and UN objectives on poverty alleviation.
Expected result:
The first major impact we expect is that, at the end of the training participants would have been empowered on leadership, management and marketing skills and how to source for needed information and credits.
It is also expected that they acquire greater economic and political voice. Be agents of change in fostering culture of peace, considering the new challenges that maybe thrown up in the intervening year with up coming election and managing conflict that arise as a result of unemployment. It is intended that this project shall act as pilot for a larger and more integrated intervention that will involve micro-credit, consultation and conflict management as this project is expected to become self-sustaining.
